Davenport Public Library is asking for clean, gently used formal wear donations for the Night to Shine prom for people with special needs.

Officials determined that a mechanical equipment malfunction in the basement caused the Dec.
17 fire at Barrel House Restaurant; Davenport firefighters arrived at 6:20 a.m. + quickly controlled the blaze, though significant smoke damage forced the closure.

Two Scott County businesses received over $1M in SBA loans in December, which helped create 55 new jobs and retain 316 in the Quad Cities area.
King Products Inc. in Davenport received $338,300 and RDBR, LLC of Eldridge was awarded $665,000 (totaling $1,003,300), according to the SBA’s Iowa office.

Experts reported that nearly 40% of third graders in the region are not reading at grade level, which may affect their school success and future opportunities.
Local institutions are offering free story times and one-on-one reading sessions to build strong early literacy skills.
Augustana College has renamed its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to the Office of the Vice President for Culture and Connection as part of its 10 Years of Becoming theme this year.
The college will soon launch new programs—helping students connect and learn across cultures.

Bald Eagle Days 2026 returns to the Quad Cities from Jan.
9-11 at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island. Families can explore conservation workshops, wildlife activities and interactive booths, with adult tickets $6 and children aged 6 to 15 $1 (children under 5 are free).

UnityPoint Health is hosting a free community session on surgical weight loss options from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan.
15 at the Jardine Auditorium at Trinity Rock Island (2701 17th St.) with experts available to answer questions; registration is required by Monday, Jan. 12 for one of 100 spots.
Cancer Support Community Iowa and NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club will host a free workshop, “Navigating Brain Fog,” on Monday, Jan.
12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. via Zoom and in-person at Gilda’s Club Moline (600 John Deere Road, Suite 101) to help cancer survivors and caregivers improve memory and focus.
