  • Local officials announced the I-74 bridge will display special colors for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. The light changes on the Quad Cities bridge across the Mississippi River aim to highlight local tradition.  The Quad City Times
  • The Hubbell-Waterman Foundation granted over $2 million to 67 Quad-Cities nonprofits, adding to a $43 million legacy of support for local organizations since its founding.  The Quad City Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Orion School Board voted to spend $188,902 on SmartLab HQ Explorer program materials for the STEM lab at the grade school — they also hired a new middle school principal.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Pleasant Valley School District board will meet on Thursday, Jan. 29 for an open session to interview three finalist candidates for the superintendent position, a key step in selecting new leadership for the district.  The Quad City Times
  • Davenport school bus crews begin early by warming buses and filling gas tanks+ ensuring systems work in brutal cold. Fleet managers coordinate efforts throughout the day to keep buses running smoothly so students get to school on time.  KWQC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents are advised to limit pets' time outdoors in the dangerously cold weather and offer extra food while washing their paws (to remove ice, salt, or chemicals) upon return.  KWQC
  • With wind chills forecast to drop to -25 to -30 this weekend, MercyOne Genesis Davenport and the CDC urge residents to review winter safety practices (including emergency kit preparation and proper appliance checks) to avoid hypothermia, frostbite, and carbon monoxide poisoning.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • The former Quad-City Times building along the riverfront has been listed online for sale at $4.2 million — the property was vacated after the paper moved its staff to East Moline on Dec. 1 and shifted printing operations to Munster.  KWQC

  • Fans crowded Central DeWitt to watch a basketball game that warmed local hearts amidst freezing conditions on Friday. Wind chills hovered around 20°F below zero and many students enjoyed a day off as they cheered the passionate competition — a memorable treat in the icy weather.  KWQC
  • KWQC TV6 News aired the latest Highlight Zone last Friday at 10:15 p.m., showing top plays from local girls’ and boys’ high school basketball; extreme cold led some teams to reschedule matchups.  KWQC
