Davenport community remembers Vern Carpenter, known as the Mayor of Gaines Street, who died Monday at age 70 after more than 30 years at 1419 North Gaines Street — neighbors said his daily waves and friendly smile eased morning commutes and led many to leave flowers in his honor.
