  • River Bend Food Bank will hold its annual Women Fighting Hunger event on March 27 at Rhythm City Casino Resort in north Davenport with podcaster and author Nora McInerny as the keynote speaker. The sold-out dinner fundraiser will run from 5 to 8 p.m. and will benefit the School Pantry Purchase program + help fight local food insecurity.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is hosting a 50th anniversary party and open house to mark its 50 years of service and connection in the community. The celebration begins today at 3 p.m. —a short program will follow at 4 p.m. —and it will end at 7 p.m.  KWQC

CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy Justin Beaver, 30, who was in a gang of 14 men, was sentenced on March 13 to 19 years and 7 months in prison for racketeering and drug trafficking—he pleaded guilty in court—and his sentence covers both charges at once.  The Quad City Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Los Angeles filmmaker Joy Shannon, a Rock Island native, debuted a seven-minute short film titled 'Rock Island Prison 1864'—which tells the story of Black Union soldiers guarding Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. The film won awards at festivals in Chicago and will screen in Rock Island this May as well as at the Pulling Focus Film Festival from June 5 to 8.  The Quad City Times
  • The Putnam Museum and Science Center opens the temporary exhibit Indigenous Roots of Mexican Americans today at its World Culture Gallery at 1717 W. 12th St. The exhibit shows artifacts and textiles from Mexico that trace 20,000 years of indigenous heritage—displaying early farming, art, and native traditions until June 1.  Quad Cities Business Journal
