CRIME NEWS

  • A Davenport man pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine while on federal supervised release—he was sentenced to 9 1/2 years in federal prison.  The Dispatch Argus

EDUCATION NEWS

  • United Township senior Kriyoshig Prasai will attend Stanford on a full-ride academic scholarship this fall — he is an immigrant from Nepal who moved to East Moline as a child and earned a 1540 on his SAT. He credited his teachers and coaches for their support — and he plans to study management science and engineering.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, protestors gathered in Davenport to oppose plans to privatize the U.S. Postal Service, saying that such changes could hurt service quality and lessen the community interaction residents value. Nationwide, similar rallies took place (in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington D.C.), with supporters stressing that the service should serve people rather than profit.  OurQuadCities
  • State lawmakers said at a Saturday forum that a bill pausing economic development funding for Iowa’s four largest counties will not affect Scott County—since it receives only a small share of the incentives due to its border location with Illinois. They noted that while the moratorium on funding will begin July 1 for other counties, Scott County is not included.  The Dispatch Argus
  • On Saturday, protesters gathered outside the Scott County Veterans Affair Building in Davenport as part of the Liberty and Justice movement to protest 80,000 job cuts at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The demonstrators showed their anger at legislators for not taking stronger action even though the White House said the cuts were meant to improve agency efficiency.  KWQC
  • Project teams from Rock Island, Milan, Moline, Rock Island County, and Bi-State Regional Commission will hold an open house for the Andalusia Road, Indian Bluff Road corridor study on April 9 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Camden Centre in Milan—residents will offer input on potential alternatives and strategies.  KWQC

  • Visit Quad Cities has announced the 13th annual QC Restaurant Week that will run (April 7-13) and feature local restaurants, cafes, breweries and fine dining establishments.
