CRIME NEWS

  • Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities is asking Davenport residents to help catch two fugitives by calling the tip line at 309-762-9500 for an elevated reward, with 27-year-old Devontre Campbell, 5-10 and 232-pound with black hair and brown eyes, wanted for escaping work release from the Davenport Work Release Center on charges of criminal mischief and eluding while on felony work, and 61-year-old Michael Cruzen, 6-foot and 185-pound with a bald head and blue eyes, wanted in Scott County for witness tampering, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.  OurQuadCities

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill in the Iowa House that increases fines for open meeting law violations was inspired by a partial collapse in downtown Davenport that left people injured and led to amputations. Rep. Gary Mohr said local leaders did not share public documents and the bill is now headed to the Senate for further review—its future remains uncertain.  KWQC
  • Homeowners Christine Deines and Matthew Bevirt of a historic Hamburg home had their request for sliding French doors denied by the Historic Preservation Commission — the commission said the door did not match the Queen Anne style and that proper approval steps were bypassed. Now the couple is circulating a petition to ask the city council to reverse the decision and reform the commission, and they may face fines until the issue is resolved.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Homeowners in the Hamburg Historic District in Davenport circulated a petition after the Historic Preservation Commission denied their request to install sliding French doors on their Queen Anne home — they plan to appeal to the city council in April. The homeowners argue that the commission focuses on design reviews instead of educating property owners and that its delays add extra financial and physical burdens.  The Quad City Times
  • Rock Island City Council approved a business development tax district near I-280 on Monday, March 25, limiting future development in the Milan Bottoms area to low-impact recreation. The council unanimously directed staff to design a conservation easement over the next 12 months—an effort that aims to preserve wetlands while protestors remain concerned about advancing controversial developments.  The Dispatch Argus
