CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Rock Island County jury found Johnell Smith III guilty—convicting him on counts of first-degree murder and home invasion—in the fatal shooting of Danny Taylor in 2023. The Quad City Times
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Quad City Arts announced the winners of the 48th Annual High School Art Invitational on April 2 with $8,000 in cash prizes and art class gift certificates awarded to area high school students and teachers. The event featured artwork from 18 schools and celebrated several awards—such as Best of Show—to recognize excellence in a variety of art forms. OurQuadCities
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ MidAmerican Energy filed a request with the Iowa Utilities Commission on Tuesday to add a fee of 0.04% on the gas part of bills — the charge is meant to cover moving pipelines and checking gas pressure. The new fee would add about 17 cents a month to an average residential customer's bill and a decision will come by the end of May. KWQC

- ➤ Bettendorf Middle School paraeducator Jana Coots said she feels rewarded as she prepares to retire this summer after 26 years of supporting students in evolving special education roles. She noted that her changing responsibilities have made the job meaningful and encouraged others who enjoy working with kids to consider a similar career. The Dispatch Argus
- ➤ More than 100 St. Ambrose University students will dance in the 13th Dance Marathon today at 11 a.m., dancing for 13.1 hours to support the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Last year the event raised over $192,000. KWQC

- ➤ City officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for Main Street Landing on April 3. Davenport Mayor predicted that this 10-acre riverfront park—spanning Main Street to the roller dams—will serve as a beacon for the Midwest as work continues in the coming months. Quad Cities Business Journal
- ➤ Regional leaders gathered on April 3 at Rhythm City Casino Resort in Davenport to share statistics and strategies addressing rising poverty, homelessness, and evictions in the Quad Cities. Executive Director Dwight Ford and Illinois Community Action President Roger Pavey presented key figures (such as one in five Americans struggling with their light bill) to urge elected officials to take action.
