COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Honor Flight of the QC volunteers are preparing for a veteran flight on Tuesday, May 13 — they are planning a special salute for fallen veteran Michael Tessendorf, whose flag will be the first item off the plane and returned to his family. A soldier will carefully carry the flag through the crowd during the airport Welcome Home event.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Community Home Partners hosted a groundbreaking ceremony last Friday for a new veterans housing project that will provide 25 tiny homes for men and women who served the country to ease the affordable housing crisis in the Quad Cities+ construction will start in July and is expected to take about a year.  KWQC

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded at 12:45 p.m. Friday at a Hy-Vee in Moline after staff received a bomb threat that demanded Apple gift cards—evacuating the store for 30 minutes as investigators examine the case as swatting.  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Last Picture House has reopened its rooftop as an outdoor cinema and lounge above 325 E. 2nd St.—it offers views of the Mississippi River and downtown. The venue is open every day until mid-fall and will start ticketed film screenings at sundown on May 1 with sold-out Star Wars showings through May 3.  Quad Cities Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Andre "Andy" Holten (86), a Holocaust survivor whose parents died in Auschwitz and Birkenau, visited Forest Grove Elementary in Bettendorf on April 24th to share his personal story with sixth-graders who are writing a graphic novel about his life (Holocaust Remembrance Day).  The Dispatch Argus
  • Augustana College and Palmer College of Chiropractic have partnered to launch a new dual-degree program this fall that lets students earn a BA in kinesiology and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in an accelerated path. The program will save about one year compared to traditional paths—Augustana leads recruitment while Palmer advises on clinical integration.  KWQC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled over 170,000 bottles of Martinelli’s apple juice because it might be contaminated with patulin that can cause nausea and vomiting—10-ounce bottles with a best by date of Dec. 5 sold in 28 states including Iowa are affected by the recall that began in March and is still ongoing.  OurQuadCities
