- ➤ The MGCB speaker series will host civil rights activists Mr. MacArthur (Mac) Cotton and Dr. Frank Smith, Jr. on May 15 and 16, featuring school talks at Edison Jr. High and Thurgood Marshall Learning Center and a public dialogue at the Martin Luther King Center in Rock Island; the free event will let community members learn from past struggles and discuss social justice. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On April 26 at 5:35 p.m. the Davenport Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 700 block of W. 17th St.—firefighters rescued two dogs from the building—and quickly controlled the blaze with no injuries reported. OurQuadCities
- ➤ On Saturday evening, Davenport firefighters rescued two dogs from a house fire on West 17th Street; the crew arrived at 5:35 p.m. and found damage on the first and second floors while investigators continue to look into the incident. KWQC
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Davenport restaurant, The Lemonade Stand, reopened in March 2024 as a student-led venue that gives interns real experience with every aspect of restaurant work— from menu design to ordering supplies. - ➤ A Davenport man set fire to curtains during an argument by using an open flame on a gas stove — he was charged with felony first degree arson and domestic abuse, remains in custody with a $10,000 cash bond, and his preliminary hearing is set for May 6. KWQC

- ➤ Tickets are on sale for an exclusive concert by Latin and Bordeño Soul band Jarabe Mexicano on Thursday, May 8 at Mercado on Fifth's south patio in Moline where the event begins at 6 p.m. and live music starts at 7 p.m.—the band will also visit 14 local schools as part of the Quad City Arts Presents series.
