COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shoppers at two farmers markets—Freight House in Davenport and QC Farmers Market in Rock Island—can pick up free reusable tote bags on Saturday, May 3 while supplies last; the totes carry educational messages on protecting waterways and are part of a regional effort to reduce plastic pollution.  OurQuadCities
  • Ann McGlynn from Tapestry Farms spoke about the upcoming Spring Fling—an event celebrating the start of spring in the Quad Cities, and she shared key details during an interview on April 29. This event marks a local celebration of the growing season with plans to welcome spring.  OurQuadCities
  • Last week, Michael and Sandra Quinn of Davenport bought a soft-coated Wheaten Terrier named Bailey, but when he began limping and showed signs of matted fur, they learned that his breeder Westwind Wheatens in Red Oak is on the Humane World for Animals’ Horrible Hundred list (noted for inspections and health issues).  KWQC

  • Curlee Girl Gifts & More, owned by Gwen Tombergs, will debut its pop-up Mother's Day gift event on May 1 at Crawford Brew Works in Bettendorf from 3-7 p.m. Attendees can browse unique items and enjoy a beverage and dinner (wine drinkers may bring their own bottle for a $10 corking fee).  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Taryn Edgin, a third-generation Deere employee with 21 years at the company, will become president and director of community relations for the John Deere Foundation on May 1—she will lead its work to support local and global communities—and brings strong ties from the Quad Cities.  Quad Cities Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brig. Gen. Daniel Duncan took command of the Joint Munitions Command at Rock Island Arsenal on April 25—he replaced Brig. Gen. Ronnie Anderson Jr. during a ceremony led by Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan. He said he will work with his team and industry partners to keep the Army ready.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Mallory Bagby, a former assistant city attorney who resigned in July 2024, filed a lawsuit against Davenport alleging she was harassed and forced out for reporting workplace concerns about discrimination and retaliation. She had earlier submitted a complaint to the Iowa Civil Rights Commission in November 2024 and names several city officials in her petition.  The Dispatch Argus
  • A free Stop the Scammers event — set for 12:30 p.m. on May 1 at the Tanglewood Hills Events Center in Bettendorf — will teach local residents how to avoid scams and protect their money. HEALTH NEWS

  • UnityPoint Health—Trinity purchased about 40 acres in northeast Bettendorf’s fast-growing business area known as The Plex on April 28, setting the stage for a new care facility near the TBK Bank Sports Complex; health care officials said they are reviewing community needs and carefully planning next steps before announcing specific plans.  Quad Cities Business Journal
