COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On May 1, the American Water Charitable Foundation awarded $65,000 in grants to five nonprofit groups in our service area, including $25,000 to a Davenport center for water education and funds for a flood risk study + these awards aim to help local projects with clean water and conservation efforts.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • On May 1, 2025, local children and families gathered at Aldridge Early Learning Center in East Moline to celebrate Head Start’s 60th birthday with cake, ice cream and a chance to explore trucks and other vehicles. Parents and local leaders said the program helps kids get ready for school and makes child care affordable while federal funding changes raise worries about its future—especially for families who depend on it.  The Quad City Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local organizations in Davenport are scrambling after AmeriCorps grants were cut — the move ended funding for 22 service members who must leave by May 9. Nonprofits like Big Brothers Big Sisters and Nahant Marsh Education Center say the cuts will stretch staff thin and force them to seek new funds — worsening local program challenges.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth sent a memo on April 30 recommending the Army restructure units at Rock Island Arsenal, including the Joint Munitions Command and Army Sustainment Command—where about 1,500 workers are employed—and a spokesperson said the changes are still being evaluated.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Officials are holding public meetings on whether to replace or repair the 85-year-old Centennial Bridge connecting Rock Island and Davenport—with a decision on the preferred alternative expected by spring 2027.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Local groups scrambled after federal cuts ended AmeriCorps grants that supported 30,000 members nationwide—Davenport lost a partnership providing 22 year-round positions and six summer roles while nonprofits like Big Brothers Big Sisters and Nahant Marsh also lost key staff.
