- ➤ Tickets are on sale for the 30th annual Taste on the River event, which will be hosted by the American Red Cross on June 11 at 6 p.m. at the Bend XPO Center in East Moline—local chefs will offer food samples and live plus silent auctions will help support disaster relief efforts. KWQC
- ➤ Quad Cities Bike to Work Week will run from May 12 to 18 and will offer free commuter breakfasts from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on most days with extended hours until 10 a.m. on Friday, May 16—an effort to boost healthy living and a greener future at stops in Moline, Davenport, Bettendorf and Rock Island. - ➤ Organizers from the Quad Cities and the Quad Cities Bicycle Club are urging residents to swap cars for bikes during Bike to Work Week from May 12 to 16—free breakfasts will be offered at Bass Street Landing on May 12, the Government Bridge bike trail in Davenport on May 13 and May 15, Leach Park in Bettendorf on May 14, and Schwiebert Riverfront Park in Rock Island on May 16 with extended hours until 10 a.m. KWQC
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two men from Davenport were arrested on May 5 on charges of copper theft after officers spotted them near W. River Drive and S. Sturdevant Street; officials said Thomas Foley admitted being present during an April 23 incident at the Kingdom Hall—both men faced charges including theft, possession of burglary tools and controlled substances while Foley was released on a $6,300 bond and Robert Hylton III on a $5,300 bond with a preliminary hearing on May 23. - ➤ On April 28, the Davenport Community School District board met at 1702 N. Main St. to approve a new principal, with Ellen Weishaar set to lead Williams Middle effective July 1, and to confirm several appointments, contract additions, resignations, and retirements—moves that adjust staffing for classrooms, food services, and support roles across the district. - ➤ Lawmakers, local officials and WIU leaders met on Monday at the WIU Quad-Cities Campus to share how the Prepare for Illinois' Future program saved WIU students over $63,000 in test prep costs and nearly $8 million statewide. They urged state funding to continue so more students can afford exam fees for careers like nursing, accounting and cybersecurity—supporting our future workforce. The Dispatch Argus
- ➤ High school students from Pleasant Valley, Bettendorf and North Scott, with guidance from EAA Chapter 75 mentors, built a VANS RV-12iS airplane that was moved to Davenport Municipal Airport, where a Deere & Co. pilot will soon conduct test flights. The four-year project involved 103 students and 17 mentors to learn aviation, STEM and teamwork, and the plane — tail number N525PN — will be put up for sale after testing. KWQC
