COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 will stop in Grand Mound at 11 a.m. on June 2 at Smith Street Crossing before leaving for Sterling (halt at B Street Crossing at 1:30 p.m.) as part of its coast-to-coast tour across America.  KWQC
  • Ten beagles rescued from a research facility in Wisconsin are now at King’s Harvest Pet Rescue in Davenport, where staff are working to socialize them before adoption. The rescue is seeking foster homes + donations to support veterinary care.  KWQC
  • On Thursday, Apr. 30, Black Hawk College honored area first responders at its 6th Annual First Responders Appreciation & Criminal Justice Career Exploration Day; the awards recognized local heroes like Officer Riley McIntyre and bus driver Rose Smith while over 140 students attended workshops on safety and career opportunities.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Party in the Park returns this summer in Davenport with food, entertainment and kids activities. Events are planned at Emeis (July 9), Lindsay (July 16), Duck Creek (July 30) and Northwest Park (Aug. 13) + city staff will join to discuss community matters and guide participating organizations.  KWQC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thornton Flooring purchased nine Carpetland USA stores in eastern Iowa and western Illinois and will maintain the brands and local teams. The deal, announced Monday, May 4, expands Thornton’s network to 12 locations.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Lee Enterprises released its preliminary second quarter financial report on May 7, showing strong digital revenue growth and cost cuts while print revenue fell and overall revenue declined. CEO Nathan Bekke said new credit agreements will drive savings and advance the company’s digital transformation.  Quad Cities Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On April 27, the Davenport Community School District board met at the Achievement Service Center (1702 N. Main St.) to review retirements, resignations and new hirings that will impact district staff.  The Quad City Times
  • Davenport Community School District will host an informational meeting from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the North High School cafeteria to explain a Dual Grad Program that lets students earn a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree from Eastern Iowa Community Colleges. Students must apply in 8th grade for the four-year program.  KWQC
  • This summer, Bettendorf Community School District and the city's Parks and Rec department will offer free meals for students, a partnership aimed at easing food access for local families. Check school announcements for further details.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers sent a bill to the governor that would require all new single- and two-family homes to include passive radon mitigation systems; supporters note installation during construction costs between $300-$500 versus up to $3,000 later. The Iowa Environmental Council will host an event in Davenport on May 12 to discuss environmental factors linked to high cancer rates.  KWQC
