COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local transit agencies will provide free rides to bike riders during Bike to Work Week (May 11-15) via Davenport CitiBus, Bettendorf Transit, and MetroLINK; each bus can accommodate up to two bikes on the rack.  KWQC
  • The Quad Cities Bicycle Club offers free breakfasts during Bike to Work Week from May 11 to 15 to encourage healthier commuting, with service from 6 to 9 a.m. (10 a.m. Friday) at Bechtel Park and the riverfront bike trail in Davenport and stops in nearby cities.  KWQC
  • United Way of the Quad Cities has partnered with the U.S. Postal Service and local groups to support the food drive against hunger by collecting nonperishable foods + high-protein options for River Bend Food Bank; residents can leave bags by their mailboxes or drop them off at post offices today.  KWQC
  • A Davenport shelter now cares for 10 beagles named after Star Wars characters—rescued from a Wisconsin breeder where they had never seen grass. The dogs will start a fresh life at the local facility.  The Quad City Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Six Black Hawk College students earned Best in Show, place and honorable mention awards at the Quad-Cities Campus’ 2026 Student Art Exhibition — a showcase that highlighted their artistic talent.  The Dispatch Argus

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Julie Ziegler, a fourth-grade teacher at Harrison Elementary, wore 63 temporary tattoos on Friday to help raise nearly $500 for the PTA (one student spent $27 from his allowance) (students embraced the creative fundraiser).  KWQC
  • Davenport will host the Stop the Scammers event on Tuesday, May 12 when state leaders discuss scams affecting Iowans in the digital age.  The Dispatch Argus
  • At Augustana College, students Addi Wessel and Morin Windle lead a program that gives trained peer support to classmates facing mental health challenges. The initiative aims to provide quick help in a supportive setting.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East Ridge Drive road reconstruction will begin May 11— the project will occur in two stages and one-way northeast traffic will be maintained for about three months, weather permitting.  The Quad City Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Ambrose is set to host and play in the 74th NAIA men's golf championships from May 12 to May 15 at TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities (marking the 10th time the school has hosted the event).  KWQC
  • Davenport North coach David Gamble was honored at the 7th annual Life is Bigger than Sports event when Muscatine presented him and his wife a jersey etched with his late daughter Kenzie's name. The high school soccer tournament, started in 2019, continues to attract Iowa’s top teams.  KWQC
