- ➤ On May 16, Rock Island Arsenal held its Armed Forces Day celebration, starting at noon and opening a keg tapping at 4 p.m.—festivities ended by 10 p.m. Today the site hosts the Run the Rock 5K and 10K at 8:45 a.m. around historic Quarters 1 on Gillespie Drive, and anyone over 18 must show valid photo ID. - ➤ Prosecutors on the seventh day of testimony in the trial of Adriana Blake focused on physical evidence from a 2024 double homicide in Davenport as the case continues. The Dispatch Argus
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 2025 National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will travel through eastern Iowa from May 21st to 23rd as it moves on a route from Indianapolis to Los Angeles, stopping in Burlington + Mount Pleasant + Washington + Riverside + Iowa City + Davenport with the final event at St. Anthony Catholic Church. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Steve Ahrens was named the new executive director of the Davenport Schools Foundation effective May 1 and he brings over 25 years of government and nonprofit experience (including service on the Davenport City Council) to support local schools and students. He also works at Common Chord (as director of strategic initiatives) and holds degrees from St. Ambrose. Quad Cities Business Journal
- ➤ Leaders from St. Ambrose University and Mount Mercy University told a Cedar Rapids Rotary Club on May 5 that the schools will merge—St. Ambrose will become the parent school in June and get U.S. Department of Education approval in 2026. Amy Novak will lead the new institution as Todd Olson retires, and the merger is expected to serve 4,100 students with annual savings between $3 million and $5 million three to five years later.
