COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leaders from social services, business, and government met in Moline Wednesday morning to discuss homelessness solutions. The panel hosted by Congressman Eric Sorensen examined streamlining HUD grant applications and increasing affordable housing options.  KWQC
  • River Bend Food Bank in Davenport is set to receive a donation through a partnership between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and america250.org. The contribution will boost local food aid programs.  The Quad City Times
  • Olympian Sarah Wells will keynote Executive Women’s Day on Tuesday, June 30 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis. The event, presented by Quad City Bank and Trust, is a collaboration of the JDC and (Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois) aimed at inspiring local professionals.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Iowa Vintage Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday at the River Center with over 70 Midwest vendors offering vintage clothing, handmade jewelry, and collectibles. Entry is free and all ages are welcome.  KWQC
  • River Action will host Ride The Island, a bike ride celebrating fathers and founders at Rock Island Arsenal on June 21 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration packets are available June 20 to 21 at 101 17th Street; fees are $15 for adults and $5 for children.  KWQC

  • QCR Holdings re-elected four Class III directors and declared a 10-cent per share dividend at its annual meeting last week. The company, headquartered in Moline & constructing a new headquarters in northeast Bettendorf, will pay dividends Friday, July 3 to shareholders on record Thursday, June 18.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • The 19-year-old Sherrard graduate — who mowed lawns as a child — is building a pressure washing business and training to become a firefighter in the local community.  The Quad City Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Festival organizers say rising fuel and transport costs are pushing up carnival ride prices & prompting budget-friendly ticket options; the Mississippi Valley Fair will run from Aug. 4-9 in Davenport while Hog Days Festival is set for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4-7.  KWQC
  • A colorful seven-piece metal sculpture has been installed at Schwiebert Riverfront Park to honor longtime cycling advocates Dean and Deb Mathias who promoted healthy lifestyles in the Quad Cities. The artwork adds a vibrant tribute to the park.  The Quad City Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Union workers at Arconic ratified a three-year contract on Wednesday night in Davenport that provides annual wage increases of 5%, 4%, and 4% along with unchanged healthcare premiums.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Davenport Community Schools will offer free summer meals for children ages 1 to 18 at several city locations from June 8 through July 31 (meals are served on a first-come, first-served basis).  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The intersection of 2nd Street and Gaines Street is closed for utility work ahead of a flood resiliency project and is expected to remain shut for two to three weeks. Drivers traveling to Illinois should use the Centennial Bridge (via Brown Street).  KWQC
