COMMUNITY NEWS

  • World Relief Quad Cities lost $2 million in funding and is now relying on community support—Jen Osing said the agency is working closely with local groups to assist refugees and immigrant students affected by recent immigration policies. Teachers in the area are also providing transitional items and personal notes to help students adjust when families fear deportation forces sudden school departures.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Habitat for Humanity invites the public to attend the dedication of Habitat Home #141 today at 10 a.m. at 1436 W. 8th St. in Davenport—guests may tour the home after the ceremony and see that it is the third Davenport home built with federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.  OurQuadCities
  • Honor Flight of the Quad Cities will take off on September 16 when KWQC + Hy-Vee sponsor its 63rd flight to take veterans on a trip to see monuments in Washington D.C. Director Stephen Garrington said community support for the program has been strong over the years.  KWQC
  • Ann McGlynn, founder and executive director of Tapestry Farms, will receive the Robert D. Ray Iowa SHARES Humanitarian Award at the Iowa Hunger Summit on July 16—she is honored for turning unused land into essential food support that helps refugees and strengthens local food systems.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Guests at Hotel Blackhawk in Davenport evacuated the building Friday afternoon after smoke was seen in the stairwell and Davenport Fire Department crews arrived to assess the situation.  KWQC

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 3, 2024, Edward McNanna (37) met with a woman at a Davenport hotel, tied her up with zip ties and duct tape, and choked and sexually assaulted her before leaving her in the bathtub (charged with second degree sexual abuse and first degree kidnapping).  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Danielle Colby—star of American Pickers—is opening the Ecdysiast Arts Museum at 322 Brady St. on Saturday, June 21; the museum will open its doors at 6 p.m., offer tours at 7 p.m., and host a show at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $75 and visitors must be 21 or older.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Davenport Mayor Mike Matson delivered his final State of the City address on June 5 at Rhythm City Casino Resort—saying Davenport is attracting more businesses, jobs, and national attention—calling it a riverfront gem that is improving local life for residents.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Calamus-Wheatland freshman Carter Henning — who had his left leg amputated after a February snowmobile accident — will play in the Pro-Am at the John Deere Classic on July 2, earning the spot through a Lexus of the Quad Cities sponsorship.  KWQC
