COMMUNITY NEWS

  • William Gustafson, a local artist, has been chosen by the Downtown Bettendorf Organization to paint a new mural titled Arches on the west-facing wall at 312 17th St. across from City Hall. He will paint the mural in June—its unveiling is planned for early July—highlighting the city’s evolving history.  KWQC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Icy Bubbles will open its Davenport location on Friday, June 13 at 3340 E. Kimberly Road, Suite B from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.—its third shop in the area. Other local businesses also made news as a new El Barril Mexican Restaurant Two opened in Cambridge on June 2, Crawford Brew Works unveiled a new menu on June 5, Toppings And More in Bettendorf set summer hours, Big T Wear & Tall Clothing reopened in Rock Island, and two Silvis businesses held grand openings on June 7.  The Quad City Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Davenport police arrested Matthew Karr—33—for eluding officers at speeds up to 100 mph on June 8; they tracked his pickup truck near Hayes Elementary to a crash, and Karr admitted fleeing while his license was already suspended.  OurQuadCities
  • A deadly shooting early Sunday morning in a Davenport neighborhood left 28-year-old Douglas Meier fatally wounded and police arrested 18-year-old Alyx Hinton on multiple charges including first-degree murder + the investigation continues.  KWQC
  • A Davenport man, 28-year-old Jordan Pierce, is charged with attempted murder after he intentionally rammed his car into two people and three vehicles on Sunday, injuring one victim who broke his femur — he fled officers and now faces additional charges while held at Scott County Jail on a $200,000 cash bond with a preliminary hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 19.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bettendorf and Davenport Community School Districts are providing free meals for children 18 and under this summer through the USDA Summer Food Service Program—Bettendorf meal sites run June 9–27 and July 7–25 while Davenport sites operate from June 9 to August 1 with no service on July 4—and no registration or ID is needed.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scott County Conservation said the mountain bike, equestrian and hiking trails in the southeastern part of Scott County Park will be closed June 14-15 for a scheduled event — only the Glynns Creek Trail will remain open for hiking.  OurQuadCities
  • Former alderwoman Judith Lee launched her mayoral campaign on Monday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Interpretive Center after filing paperwork on May 28, running as the second candidate while Mayor Matson will not seek reelection. The 71-year-old environmental consultant said she will end corruption and expand council authority—aiming to make local government more effective.  The Quad City Times
