  • Longtime volunteers Gary and Beth Loy will serve one last year on the Lost Parents Committee at the Jr. Bix 7—their lost and found run is scheduled for July 25 before they hand over the role to a younger leader. The couple has connected lost parents and children for nearly 30 years and will continue running in the main race each year.  The Quad City Times
  • United Way QC announced it awarded $2M in grants to 53 local nonprofits — the funds support education, financial security and health in Scott and Rock Island counties over a three-year period. Local community volunteers from 39 groups helped review 74 grant requests totaling $5.5M to ensure the investments meet measurable outcomes.  Quad Cities Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities has urged residents to help capture two suspects—Frederick Cooks, 21, 6’4”, 237 pounds with black hair and brown eyes wanted by the Iowa DOC District 7 High Risk Unit for three counts of first degree theft and two counts of eluding, and Armondo Hopson, 21, 5’11”, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes wanted by the Scott County Sheriff for first degree harassment and violating a no contact order—with tips submitted anonymously to 309-762-9500 for an elevated reward within one week.  OurQuadCities
  • A jury in Scott County Court is continuing deliberations over Devon Braet, a 35-year-old Davenport man charged with 14 crimes including first-degree murder & other offenses in connection with the January 16 double homicide that left Brian Goodwin & Amy Smith dead after police responded to a fire on North Division Street.  OurQuadCities

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Davenport City Council postponed the vote on nearly $4M in railroad crossing upgrades today — they need extra time to finalize a contract with Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway. The council will upgrade 12 crossings from Mound Street to Marquette into quiet zones with new signals, signage and pavement markings near Main Street Landing.  KWQC
  • The Iowa Supreme Court approved $1,177,030 in grants to 14 nonprofit legal aid programs that help low-income Iowans with civil legal problems—World Relief Quad Cities in Davenport received $25,000. The funds come from interest on IOLTA accounts and are managed by a seven-member commission that has awarded over $27 million since 1985—supporting aid for cases like divorce and unsafe housing.  OurQuadCities

  • Gilda’s Club will launch a teen support program tomorrow—designed to help young people affected by cancer share their feelings and learn about available resources at its Davenport and Moline locations.
