CRIME NEWS

- ➤ Devon Braet was found guilty on Thursday of first-degree murder and arson after being charged with killing Brian Goodwin and Amy Smith and setting their bodies on fire in a Davenport apartment in January 2024—he is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 15. KWQC

Eric Shirley replaced interim executive director Dan Reilly as head of the Army Sustainment Command and took charge as senior commander at the Arsenal—Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Gusman replaced Jorge Escobedo as the senior enlisted leader. - ➤ More than 100 people gathered outside the Davenport Congressional Office building on Thursday to protest the deportation of 20-year-old Pascual Pedro, who fled with his father from West Liberty eight years ago. Pedro—who worked as a construction worker and youth soccer coach with no criminal record—was taken into custody during an ICE check in Cedar Rapids before being sent to Guatemala, and protest leaders later met with congressional staff to voice their concerns. - ➤ On Saturday, July 12, Government Bridge and Rock Island Viaduct will close to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for roadway sealing, and the Rock Island Gate will be closed so drivers must use the Moline Gate while the Moline Bridge will have intermittent single-lane closures that are not expected to cause delays—given low weekend traffic.
