- ➤ Quad Cities Chamber leaders celebrated a new federal tax law that permanently made key measures such as a 20% Qualified Business Income deduction + bonus depreciation for capital assets law, fulfilling their long push for small business support. - ➤ WQPT launched the America 250 initiative to mark the nation's upcoming semiquincentennial by inviting community members to share their civic spark and volunteer with local nonprofits—its efforts beginning with a new production on the Army's 250th Anniversary. The station will air and stream programs on America's history and host a screening with a discussion panel in September—highlighting local engagement with our national heritage. - ➤ Davenport high school students attended Camp Gain this week to learn about medical careers by visiting an operating room and practicing emergency procedures. Forty students participated in the week-long camp—run since 2009—and many are exploring paths toward careers in health services. KWQC
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Heavy rains on July 11 produced flash flooding in parts of Davenport that forced evacuations from three apartment buildings on 35th Street and damaged personal items including nursing supplies. - ➤ Davenport is planning to add red light cameras at three intersections, including Southbound Brady Street at West 65th Street/Veterans Memorial Highway, 53rd Street and Elmore Avenue, and Kimberly Road and Welcome Way, to automatically ticket drivers who run red lights—this addition follows four existing cameras and will be installed by Verra Mobility pending city council approval. - ➤ Davenport Public Works is asking motorists to share their opinions on a plan to use up to $250M from the U.S. Department of Transportation to replace the 75-year-old South Clark Bridge over Black Hawk Creek + the survey runs until July 21. KWQC
- ➤ Bettendorf city officials said the pedestrian bridge near TBK Sports Complex is $870,000 over its $11.7 million budget. They will shift money from north side highway work (to cover the extra cost) and complete the bridge with its planned design unchanged. KWQC
- ➤ Today, Davenport City Council advanced a plan to lease the chapel on the Annie Wittenmyer property back to Davenport Junior Theatre for performances if approved at next week’s meeting. The theatre was forced out earlier for affordable housing, and if leased they will use the space until 2030—though its impact on the housing project remains unclear. OurQuadCities
