COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Next month, paddlers will take over the Mississippi River on August 15 and 16 for Floatzilla-Palooza, a two-day event that features a kayak obstacle course—cardboard boat races and a rubber duck hunt. River Action hopes the new activities will show locals the need to protect clean water and wildlife.  KWQC
  • Quad-Cities groups hosted a John Lewis Day of Action on July 17 at TMBC Lincoln Community Center in Davenport—screening a documentary about his life and featuring a talk by community leader Yolanda Grandberry Pugh—reminding locals that every vote matters as concerns over political division grew.  The Quad City Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dry Goods, a young women’s fashion retailer and subsidiary of Davenport-based Von Maur, announced on July 17 that it will open four new stores in New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania this year, bringing its total to 88 locations across 24 states. The move marks its debut in New Jersey and follows earlier expansion plans announced in May 2024.  Quad Cities Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Putnam Museum and Science Center in Davenport will collect local stories about Islam for a temporary exhibit—'Islam in the Quad Cities'—scheduled for spring. Guest curator Ferdaus Ahmad is working with local groups to gather these personal experiences for display in the World Culture Gallery.  OurQuadCities
  • Dynasty Entertainment LLC announced that The Sweet Caroline Tour Starring Jay White, a tribute to Neil Diamond, will be held at The Adler Theatre in Davenport on Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Adler Box Office with prices starting at $39+ applicable fees.  OurQuadCities

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congress cut federal funding for public broadcasting so that $1.1 billion for NPR was reduced, meaning WVIK in the Quad Cities will lose over $130,000 each year—about 13% of its budget. WVIK’s general manager Jared Johnson said that if smaller stations do not replace lost funds, they might face programming or staff cuts by October.  OurQuadCities
  • Davenport mayor apologized for not letting the civil rights director speak during a council meeting. Alderman Tim Kelly said he noticed that white council members let white directors speak without interruption (and he asked why the civil rights director was cut off), raising concerns about fairness in the meeting.  The Quad City Times

  • Rejuvenate Housing restored an abandoned house at 516 W. 15th St. in Davenport so a new family can move in; the nonprofit held an open house on Thursday to showcase the project.  Quad Cities Business Journal
