COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Healthy Kids Iowa—state’s new summer food program—has shifted operations at River Bend Food Bank so that volunteers now spend their time packing $40 food boxes for eligible families instead of sorting donations. Approved in early May amid rising food insecurity, the program has distributed 2,500 boxes in June and 3,100 in July and plans to pack about 3,500 boxes in August.  The Quad City Times

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Boozie’s Bar & Grill in downtown Davenport will close after this weekend for up to six months for building repairs, as noted on social media. Managers are exploring options for a temporary kitchen to continue meal service during repairs.  OurQuadCities
  • A mom with her daughters has opened a new soul food restaurant called Soul Ties at 118 Fourth St in downtown Davenport. They serve carry-out meals Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—menu items include shrimp po boys, gouda grits and pork chop dinners—and they plan to offer dine-in service later.  The Dispatch Argus

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 16, a 76-year-old Rock Island man was sentenced after police found him asleep in his truck at a Bettendorf casino loaded with meth and a loaded gun — he pleaded guilty to intent to deliver meth and possession or control of a firearm by a felon, and his release date will be determined by the corrections department.  OurQuadCities

  • Mississippi Valley Fair organizers announced a change in the concert lineup for July 30 — LOCASH and Maddie & Tae will perform in place of Nate Smith while existing Fun Cards remain valid for all shows.  KWQC
  • Rhythm City Casino Resort in Davenport will host The POP 2000 TOUR featuring Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC, O-Town, Ryan Cabrera and LFO on December 18 at 8:00 p.m.—tickets go on presale July 24 and on sale July 25 at 10:00 a.m.  OurQuadCities
  • Officials said the Bix Beiderbecke Museum will offer a free preview Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at its new downtown space — 112 W. 2nd St, and visitors will receive a voucher for free admission when the museum fully opens later in August.  KWQC
