  • The Freight House Farmers Market will host a Back to School Kids Market on August 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—14 young entrepreneurs aged 6 to 14 will sell items like jewelry, crocheted stuffed animals and baked goods to learn about business after years of planning.  KWQC
  • Maschio Gaspardo announced it became a shareholder in Lynx AG LLC, a firm in Churdan that specializes in no-till seeding technology; it also launched Maschio Gaspardo USA INC—an immediate joint venture to develop large-format precision planters for North American farmers.  Quad Cities Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Attorneys for Adriana Blake filed a motion for a new trial on July 14, citing trial errors such as the separation from her co-defendant Devon Braet and the use of a Davenport detective to summarize testimony that they say prejudiced the jury in the 2024 shooting deaths of Brian Goodwin and Amy Smith. Her sentencing is set for August 28 — a date that will determine her fate under mandatory life sentence laws for first-degree murder.  The Quad City Times

  • A student from North Scott High School showcased his robot at the Mississippi Valley Fair on Thursday, July 31—demonstrating his talent in robotics.  The Dispatch Argus

FINANCE NEWS

  • A winning Powerball lottery ticket worth $50,000 was purchased at KC Brothers on Myrtle Street in Davenport but remains unclaimed; officials say the prize must be claimed by August 28—if not, the money will return to the lottery prize pool.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Utilities Commission approved Iowa American Water's new water and sewer rates on July 15 — they take effect today and raise the average residential bill by about $8. The increase, the first in nearly four years, follows roughly $157 million in recent infrastructure upgrades to the service systems.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities will break ground on Homes No. 143 and 144 in Davenport on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at 513 East Dover Court (for Katelyn’s family) and at 11 a.m. at 424 East 15th St (for Destiny’s family), and the group will build two more homes later this year.  Quad Cities Business Journal
