COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Quad Cities Hot Air Balloon Festival began on Friday at Rhythm City Casino in Davenport where high winds kept balloons on the ground while guests enjoyed live music, food and games that support local nonprofits. Today the festival continues with a car show starting at 2 p.m. and public gates opening at 3 p.m. plus prizes for the first 50 cars.  KWQC

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old Rock Island man—Vester L. Anderson—was charged with attempted murder after shooting a man in the chest on July 5 near North Ripley Street and later faced theft and burglary charges after being linked to a stolen Toyota Camry and attempted break-ins on July 12.  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Rust Belt Americana returns to the Quad Cities area this weekend with hundreds of antique vendors, a national car show, and live auctions at Bend XPO in East Moline— the event runs from Thursday to Sunday and tickets cost $20 per adult.  KWQC
  • Applications are open for the 2025 Adler Theatre Fund Grants provided by the Quad Cities Cultural Trust to support local performing arts groups staging shows at the historic Adler Theatre in downtown Davenport—proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29.  Quad Cities Business Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • IowaWORKS will host the ninth annual Quad-Cities Success Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13th at NorthPark Mall in Davenport—offering on-site interviews and connecting about 100 local employers and community resources with veterans and job seekers.  Quad Cities Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Junior Achievement of the Heartland announced that Lysa Hegland — with over 25 years of local leadership experience — will serve as the new president and CEO, effective Aug. 20; she will succeed Dougal Nelson, who retired in April.  Quad Cities Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on October 7 in the case about the downtown building collapse that killed three people on May 28, 2023. The case asks if public employees such as building inspector Trishna Pradhan and her supervisor Rich Oswald are protected by qualified immunity — a decision that will determine if they remain part of the lawsuit.  KWQC
  • Davenport 7th Ward Alderwoman Mhisho Lynch announced on July 30 that she will not seek reelection, saying the part-time title hides a role that demands full-time commitment — she plans to focus on other political opportunities for positive change.  The Quad City Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • MercyOne Genesis and the MercyOne Genesis Health Services Foundation will hold the 5th annual Gather for the Cure on Oct. 19 at Scott County Park, Whispering Pines Indoor Shelter outside Eldridge—early bird registration is $25 until Aug. 31—and the event supports a voucher program that funds free breast screenings.  Quad Cities Business Journal
