- ➤ Ten small businesses run by kids took part in the Back-to-School Kids Market Saturday morning at Freight House Farmers’ Market in Davenport — the event helped young vendors aged six to 14 learn skills like customer service and counting change. KWQC
- ➤ Local non-profit Soles for Children will give more than 1,000 pairs of shoes along with hats, mittens, coats and free haircuts to children in need in the Quad Cities this back-to-school season. The group will hold a giveaway on Sept. 21 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Rock Island — followed by a second event on Sept. 28 at the Friendly House in Davenport while awarding scholarships to two high school graduates. - ➤ The 2025 Women Lead Change Conference: Quad Cities will be held on November 12 at the Waterfront Convention Center in downtown Bettendorf—keynote speaker Lisa Bluder and five other experts will speak at the one-day event. - ➤ The Last Picture House will host a one-night-only screening of Unbreakable at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 — Cinema Therapy hosts Jonathan Decker and Alan Seawright will offer live discussion of the film’s themes during the event. Quad Cities Business Journal

- ➤ Davenport North High School is set to receive over $29 million in renovations after the school board approved the funding Monday night — Bill Bruce Builders Inc. was selected as the lowest bidder. The updates include new classrooms, a cafeteria, state-of-the-art science labs, and over $4 million in HVAC upgrades, with work scheduled to finish by 2027. KWQC

- ➤ Former banker and educator Jim Huiskamp announced Aug. 11 that he is running for mayor of Davenport. He joins three other candidates in the primary on Oct. 7 as registration is open and he pledged to boost financial stability, public safety, and communication—drawing on 20 years of leadership at Blackhawk Bank and Trust. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UnityPoint Health—Trinity became the first hospital in the Quad Cities to use a combined treatment for atrial fibrillation that pairs pulsed field ablation with the WATCHMAN device at Trinity Heart Center in Rock Island. Dr. Mark Shen performed the procedure in April and patient Jack Evans of Donahue said he now feels better and is back playing golf. Quad Cities Business Journal
