COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brad Martell, who has spent 46 years with YMCAs nationwide, will retire as president/CEO on Dec. 31 from the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley in Davenport. Since taking the role in 2013, he drove growth through increased membership to nearly 53,000 & the addition of new facilities as the board now looks for his successor.  Quad Cities Business Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Deere announced layoffs of over 230 workers at three Midwest facilities—two in the Quad Cities—due to falling farm orders and low commodity prices. Layoffs will begin Aug. 29 for 115 workers at East Moline, Sept. 26 for 52 workers at Moline, and Sept. 19 for 71 workers at Waterloo, and affected employees will receive supplemental benefits.  Quad Cities Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • The Quad Cities Missing Persons Network has helped families search for their loved ones, including Trudy Appleby's, and Dennis Harker said a recent indictment may help solve the crime—giving hope that new information will lead to her discovery.  KWQC
  • Davenport police are searching for 90-year-old Richard Moore who has dementia and was last seen Friday at 11 a.m. in the 4200 block of East 58th Street wearing a turquoise blue golf shirt, blue jeans with holes in both knees, and glasses—call 911 if you have any information.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nominations for Davenport’s city and school elections are now open as filing begins on Aug. 25 for a November 4 vote—petition forms are available for aspiring candidates.  The Quad City Times
  • Davenport approved a lease agreement that allows the Junior Theatre to perform main stage shows at the Annie Wittenmyer Center and practice at the Davenport Learning Center due to an arrangement with the school district—this decision sets the stage for their upcoming season.  KWQC
  • The city of Davenport finalized a bid exceeding $5 million to repave 4th Street. The project is part of a plan to convert 3rd and 4th Street from one-way to two-way traffic—aiming to improve downtown navigation for walkers and drivers.  KWQC

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Ambrose football received a $500 check from Royal Ball Run for Autism to support its autism acceptance program—money that will help fund team initiatives. Earlier this year, the team hired Ben Andrews with autism as a staff member to assist at practices and games.  KWQC
  • Forty-two local businesses took part in over 20 sports and service challenges in the fifth annual Corporate Games held from May 31 to July 31. Winners were honored yesterday at ImpactLife Blood Center in Davenport—Modern Woodmen of America won Division 1 and Lincoln Electric Automation won Division 2.  Quad Cities Business Journal
