CRIME NEWS

  • Darrien Irving, 34, was charged after a head-on collision on Brady Street late Saturday night near Palmer Chiropractic College and KWQC TV6 — he faces charges for operating while intoxicated, multiple traffic violations, false imprisonment and other offenses and is held on a $15,000 bond.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson will host a roundtable in Independence on Tuesday to highlight a new tax provision exempting tips and overtime from federal income tax—part of a broader tax bill aimed at improving worker retention in local service businesses. Local bar and restaurant owners say the break will help attract employees in a tight labor market.  The Dispatch Argus
  • AmeriCorps funding was cut in April, which led to 568 members being dismissed and many programs missing the chance to bring back staff before the program year ended—funding was restored in late July but many groups could not rehire in time. Local directors said the timing disrupted services in Davenport and elsewhere, and some programs are now pausing their AmeriCorps participation as they plan for more stable support next year.  The Dispatch Argus
