- ➤ Hand in Hand will open a second People with Purpose day-habilitation program on Monday, Sept. 1 to serve individuals with disabilities aged 18 and up—addressing a growing waiting list. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Edwards United Church of Christ until a permanent site is secured by Jan. 1. Quad Cities Business Journal

- ➤ Bill Thompson discovered a Purple Heart—found while cleaning a Huntsville home—that belonged to World War II submariner Richard 'Dick' Paper and is now preparing to return it to his family in Davenport; Jeff Paper, the son of Bob Paper, confirmed his interest in receiving the treasured item. - ➤ Davenport Community School District Superintendent TJ Schneckloth said today that drivers must be careful as more students return to school and reminded students to follow the district’s cell phone rules. He also noted that construction work will be underway in some schools (upgrades will be seen starting Monday) as the new school year begins. KWQC
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After heavy rains in July caused Duck Creek to rise and flood areas near Davenport, local officials and emergency management leaders met to discuss adding a network of stream gauges and rainfall gauges—tools that could send alerts faster during flash floods. Retired weather official Ray Wolf said the improved system may help trigger quicker road closures and evacuations when future storms intensify. The Dispatch Argus
- ➤ As the new school year starts, Iowa drivers in Davenport must follow state rules when school buses show flashing lights. Drivers behind a bus must not pass and must stop 15 feet away when red lights flash and the stop arm comes out—drivers coming from the opposite side slow to 20 mph until it is safe, and breaking these rules can lead to up to 180 days of license suspension.
