  • Across the QCA, several Labor Day events will take place as East Moline holds a parade on Sept. 1 at 11 a.m. from John Deere Harvester Works led by retired union leader Quintin Waterman, Rock Island hosts a 'Rockin’ the Arts' parade on Sept. 1 at 9:30 a.m. from Washington Jr. High School led by Tammy Mendoza, and Bettendorf offers its annual Doggy Splash fundraiser at the YMCA Water Park at 5:30 p.m.; today, Milan launches its family Harvest Festival at Camden Park through Sept. 1.  KWQC
  • This summer marks 35 years of the ADA as Empowering Abilities in Davenport supports people in getting and keeping jobs—CEO Jeff Ashcraft said local residents like Marcus now thrive at a grocery store with the law’s protection.   • Grace Technologies is a company in Davenport that makes industrial safety products and has been named a top workplace since 2018—its caring work culture and smart inventions boost local manufacturing. CRIME NEWS

  • After the school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School on August 27, the Davenport Diocese prayed for courage to confront evil with goodness while area leaders lowered flags and offered heartfelt condolences — supporting victims and families in Minneapolis.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Horizon Science Academy Davenport opened this week as Davenport’s first charter school, offering free STEM and college prep programs with plans to add more grade levels later. A ribbon-cutting will be held Friday from 9:30–10:30 a.m. at 2626 Boies Ave. with Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer expected to attend.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown Davenport's historic John Hiller building was torn down on August 26th after city officials said it was unsafe — the limestone structure had been empty since 2015 and plans to fix it had stalled.  The Quad City Times
  • Davenport is looking for a new city administrator and has explained the process for choosing a qualified candidate—each step of the selection method is clearly outlined. The city expects to post details soon for interested applicants.  The Quad City Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shannon Stubbs was appointed as chief executive officer of The Quad Cities Rehabilitation Institute in Moline. Ms. Stubbs — a licensed speech-language pathologist with over 25 years of health care experience — will lead the 40-bed rehabilitation hospital that serves patients recovering from major injuries and illnesses.  Quad Cities Business Journal
