COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Patti McRae from the Quad City Animal Welfare Center said that three-month-old kitten Shrek is available for adoption along with his two siblings among over 50 spayed, neutered, and vaccinated kittens. The center will unveil a cuddling dog and cat statue on Saturday—supporting its shelter programs with part of the sales going to donations.  KWQC

  • Bettendorf High School grad Arianna Vesey self-published her first children's book 'A Bëeg-BAhD Day'—a wolf tale that challenges old ideas—and told the Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus how a fifth grade poetry contest sparked her love for writing and new plans for more stories.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Andrew Fitzgerald announced his run for Iowa House District 98 on Tuesday as Monica Kurth will not run for re-election—he is a lifelong Davenport resident and Davenport West High School graduate who said he will strengthen public schools, improve access to healthcare, and boost the local economy.  KWQC
  • Nathan Ramker, a small business owner who lost by only 47 votes in 2024, announced his run for Iowa House District 98 Tuesday to protect property rights, lower taxes and boost school transparency—his bid comes after Rep. Monica Kurth said she will not run for re-election.  KWQC
  • Davenport City Council will hold a public hearing today on St. Ambrose University’s revised Campus Land Use Plan after community feedback led to changes in the proposal (including a new academic building, outdoor recreation areas, and 64 parking spots). Local leaders will review the adjustments made to address local concerns.  KWQC

  • UnityPoint Health and Trinity Health Foundation will host the free 17th annual V.R. Alla Community Health Symposium on heart health on Sept. 24 at Bally’s Quad Cities Casino & Hotel — 777 Bally Blvd. in Rock Island — where Dr. Alyas Chaudhry will discuss medical innovation from 5:30-7 p.m. and guests must RSVP by Sept. 17 to secure one of 200 spots.  Quad Cities Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • River Action will host its 20th annual Taming of the Slough Adventure Triathlon on Saturday, September 13 in Moline with transitions at the Bass Street YMCA. Participants will paddle 2.5 miles through Sylvan Slough, bike 7.5 miles with two laps on Sylvan Island trails, and run 2 miles over the I-74 bridge—early bird registration is available for $35 until Friday, September 12.  Quad Cities Business Journal
