COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sam Wiley at the Rock Island County Animal Care and Control Shelter introduced Pumpkin, an eight-week-old kitten that was playful and purring on Tuesday. The shelter had over 450 animals and offered adoption specials of $25 for adults and $30 for kittens—while it encouraged volunteers and donations.  KWQC
  • Iowa’s top masons will compete in the Bricklayer 500 tomorrow at 11 a.m. at TCC Materials in Eldridge, where they will have one hour to build a 26-foot-long brick wall—judges will assess speed, precision, and craftsmanship as winners advance to a national contest in Las Vegas.  KWQC

  • River Bend Food Bank asked Quad Cities area businesses to join the Million Meals Match program—designed to boost its annual Student Hunger Drive and fight food insecurity. Jayna Gallagher led the event on Sept. 15 to kick off the effort.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Costco warns Iowa members about recalled Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene bottles that may shatter even when unopened—customers are advised to wrap the bottles in paper towels, put them in a plastic bag, and dispose of them while returning their recall letter for a refund.  KWQC
  • Tiffany’s Treasures in Davenport was hit hard by flash flooding in July that nearly forced the shop to close, but owner Tiffany Hunt says it will reopen Oct 1 to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The vintage resale shop will also restart its Blessings with Tiffany’s program—donating items to local families in need.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Augustana College in Rock Island was named a Dream School as one of the nation’s 75 New Dream Schools in Jeffrey Selingo’s book released on Sept. 9— it is one of only three Illinois colleges on the list and the only private college honored.  Quad Cities Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Davenport city leaders will discuss the FRESH Project— a pilot program offering grants of $5,000 to $25,000— to help food-related businesses in the Rockingham Corridor tonight at the City Council Committee of the Whole meeting. The project—drawing from $100,000 ARPA funds allocated this spring—aims to counter recent business closures and revitalize the area.  KWQC
