COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Children at the Skip-A-Long Childhood Center in Davenport will keep getting free meals through a renewed Head Start program funded by an Iowa Department of Education grant — ensuring kids from families on FIP and SNAP receive healthy food.  KWQC
  • Eighty-one veterans traveled from Moline to Washington D.C. Tuesday as part of the Honor Flight to visit memorials like the National Air and Space Museum and Arlington National Cemetery. They returned home to be greeted by friends and family — a day that honored their service and sacrifice.  KWQC
  • YWCA Quad Cities has joined the National Diaper Bank Network and Alliance for Period Supplies to help families get diapers, wipes, period supplies, and hygiene items as nearly one in three female-headed households in the Quad Cities live in poverty. Yesterday— the center partnered with Davenport Community School District and River Bend Food Bank in a private event that served 75—90 families and helped 250 people with food and a hot meal.  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The World Ballet Company will perform The Great Gatsby Ballet at Adler Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 7 as part of its national tour honoring the novel’s 100th anniversary—this Broadway-style show features original jazz music, multimedia sets and hand-sewn costumes with a live singer.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Peter Noone and his band Herman’s Hermits will perform their Olde English Christmas show on Dec. 18 at the Adler Theatre at 136 E 3rd St.—Davenport. Tickets start at $39 and are available in person at the theater's box office.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • The Putnam Museum and Science Center will open its new exhibit Animal Armor: The Evolution of Armor in Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals tomorrow at (1717 W. 12th St.) in Davenport. The exhibit will run through Feb. 15 and shows how creatures like sea scorpions and Ankylosaurs used armor to help them survive over 500 million years.  Quad Cities Business Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Davenport leaders launched a pilot program called the FRESH Project to support food-related businesses in the Rockingham Corridor—an urban food desert from Marquette Street to River Drive—by offering $5,000 to $25,000 grants from ARPA funding; the City Council approved the program on Wednesday and applications will open by late October.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joan of Arc Catholic School had a ribbon cutting to mark its completion and will welcome students and staff this fall. The new school, built for $35.5 M and able to serve up to 630 students, is the first Catholic school in Scott County in nearly 50 years — it is located on Hopewell Road and Criswell Avenue.  KWQC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jeff VanderWiere, a Michigan fire leader, has been named the new chief of the Davenport Fire Department—replacing retiring Chief Mike Carlsten. He will be sworn in on November 5 and host a public open house on October 16 at Fire Station 3—bringing his 29 years of experience to lead the 135-person team.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Local leaders are urging the Defense Department to clarify restructuring plans for Rock Island Arsenal after the military announced changes in the spring. Lawmakers say 6,000 work at the base, which supports 15,000 jobs and adds $1.2 billion to the local economy—community members remain hopeful that the Army will protect these jobs.  KWQC
  • Hand in Hand warned that planned Medicaid funding cuts may force the organization to reduce key services for people with disabilities—such as 1:1 support and respite breaks for caregivers. Local advocates call for quick political action to prevent families from losing vital care.  Quad Cities Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 5th annual Gather for the Cure will be held on Oct 19 from 12 to 2 p.m. at Scott County Park’s Whispering Pines Shelter, and it will raise funds for no-cost mammograms and ultrasounds through the MercyOne Genesis Voucher Program—registration is $30 and must be completed by Sept. 30.  KWQC
