COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A drop in center for unhoused individuals will open in Rock Island on Oct. 1 to offer coffee, secure storage, Wi-Fi, clothing and hygiene supplies — a safe place for daytime support when most shelters are closed. It will operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and serve as a community hub for resource navigation.  KWQC

  • Fifty archived images offer a look at downtown Davenport's change over time—drawn from the Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus archives—and highlight key moments in the city's history.  The Dispatch Argus

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Reynolds met with Davenport school leaders in Des Moines on Wednesday to celebrate improvements in teacher retention, student attendance and curriculum since a major district shakeup in 2020—officials say the changes help students succeed.  KWQC
  • We Work the Waterways is hosting Maritime Interaction Day today at Scott Community College in Riverdale for about 216 Quad Cities high school seniors — the event offers hands-on maritime activities and networking with shipping and logistics professionals.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Black Hawk College will offer a free six-week Basic Training program in court reporting and captioning at its Quad-Cities Campus in Moline from Oct. 25 through Dec. 6—classes run 9-11 a.m. on Saturdays and come with free textbooks, steno machines, and potential tuition assistance for those who choose to pursue further study.  Quad Cities Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Davenport City Council approved hiring Tim Gleason as interim city administrator who will start on November 3—he resigned from his Decatur post effective Oct. 31. He will serve until at least May 3 while the city continues its search for a permanent administrator.  The Dispatch Argus

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nearly 800 residents walked on Sept. 13 at Vibrant Arena at The Mark and raised over $100,000 for Alzheimer’s Association care, support and research programs; fundraising continues until year-end. Top team Team Senior Star—led by Baylee Bradley—raised more than $14,000.  Quad Cities Business Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Sept. 3, EHDG and Newbury Living were honored at the Housing Iowa Conference by the Iowa Finance Authority for their New Horizons project that renovated 21 properties in Davenport into 45 modern, affordable homes—designed for families earning at or below 60% of the area median income. The award highlighted their innovative work with local contractors to integrate these homes into existing neighborhoods and preserve community character.  Quad Cities Business Journal
