COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students in the Quad-Cities have joined River Bend Food Bank to start the 39th Student Hunger Drive, which will run for six weeks collecting food and funds to help local families.  The Quad City Times
  • Lynda Sargent’s Heart of Home Ministries received a $20,000 Royal Neighbors empowerment grant on Sept. 24 to expand its Food Plex initiative and provide healthy food for families in need. The Rock Island nonprofit serves over 22,000 individuals annually & offers food, clothing, and programs to support those facing poverty.  Quad Cities Business Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Six residents were displaced Tuesday morning when a house on Parkwood Drive caught fire — firefighters quickly put out the flames and the Red Cross was contacted to assist them.  KWQC

  • Honkamp earned a Top Workplaces award from Iowa Top Workplaces 2025 for the 12th year—based on feedback from a third-party survey—showing its focus on training and work–life balance. The award from the Des Moines Register indicates that employees feel respected and supported at work.  Quad Cities Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A teen in East Moline died when the gun he handled discharged and local expert Jeanelle Westrom at Davenport Guns & Shooting Club urged families in the Quad Cities to secure firearms with locks—she stressed that education and proper storage are key to preventing future tragedies.  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Flying Eagle, a 23-foot hand-carved cedar canoe, attempted a world record quarter-mile run at Cordova Racetrack and is traveling down the Mississippi River to be returned to its maker in Clarksdale. It will soon stop in Davenport — its caretaker Willow Bill says safety and sharing its story with local communities remain top priorities.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Iowa Corn announced the students selected for the 2025-2026 Collegiate Advisory Team program—where they will visit the state capitol, tour industry operations and learn skills like leadership, communication, policy and industry relations over four sessions next school year. Local mentor—Henry Rose from Eldridge—will guide the group as they build real-world experience outside the classroom.  Quad Cities Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • MercyOne President and CEO Bob Ritz announced his retirement effective January 2 in a news release on Sept. 30. He began at Mercy Des Moines Hospital in 2013 and helped grow the health system with lab deals and new hospitals in the Quad Cities — Trinity Health will soon look for a new leader.  Quad Cities Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Morning Star Academy and Erie-Prophetstown won their volleyball matches Tuesday night. Morning Star Academy beat Galesburg Christian 3-0 and the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers won against Kewanee, keeping their perfect conference record.  KWQC
  • St. Ambrose men’s soccer lost 3-1 to Olivet Nazarene and the women’s volleyball team lost 3-2 to St. Francis in recent games in Davenport. The scores show the teams fell short in key regular season contests.  KWQC
