COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Scott County hosts Howl-O-Ween in the Park today at Centennial Dog Park from noon to 2 p.m.—the doggie costume contest starts at 1 p.m. and families will enjoy trick-or-treating, giveaways, and raffles.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Friday, non-profit SAL broke ground on its new early childcare facility in Rock Island.  The Quad City Times
  • Non-profit SAL broke ground on a new early childcare facility in Rock Island on Friday — the project will offer early education to local families.  The Dispatch Argus
  • At Hayes Elementary School, the principal cut his hair—fulfilling a deal where students had to hit a 95% attendance rate—after the students reached their target on Friday.  KWQC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A report by the Iowa Environmental Council showed that tax breaks for wind and solar helped build a strong renewable energy industry but also hurt nuclear power by causing the closure of the Duane Arnold plant and pushing big tech companies to invest billions in restarting it. Experts say Iowa must use a balanced energy mix—renewables, nuclear, and other sources—to keep the grid stable and meet future power needs.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Jim Huiskamp, the retired CEO of Blackhawk Bank and Trust & former teacher, is running for Davenport mayor in 2025.  The Dispatch Argus

  • Jason Gordon, a former at‐large alderman — and chair of the Greater Davenport Redevelopment Corporation board — has announced his run for Davenport mayor in 2025.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Early voting has begun in Davenport ahead of the Oct. 7 primary, with four candidates contesting the mayor’s seat—each offering a clear plan for the city. Residents can review the candidate profiles to understand their visions as the election progresses.  The Dispatch Argus
