COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley received a $1 million donation from the Myers family that will fund renovation and expansion projects at Camp Abe Lincoln. The gift will update the camp’s facilities and rename the main lodge as The Thomas Myers Lodge—echoing improvements Tom Myers led in the 1970s.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • King’s Harvest Ministries is hosting a winter coat drive today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is collecting clean, gently-used winter coats, gloves, and hats for people in need in the Quad Cities — donors may drop off items in the parking lot on Warren Street or contribute money.  KWQC

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Residents at Forest Grove Apartments united after a fatal fire that began around 10:30 p.m. last night, leaving one person dead & ten without homes & all without power as neighbors worked together to clear the damage.  KWQC

  • Whitey's Ice Cream is making progress on a new store in Bettendorf at the corner of Forest Grove Drive and Devils Glen Road — the site will feature a drive-thru and is expected to open before the end of the year.  KWQC
  • John Sorensen, former president of the Iowa Bankers Association (IBA), received the 2025 James A. Leach Leadership Award on September 22 for his 38-year career and leadership as the association celebrated its 25th anniversary. He now serves on several financial boards while the IBA also honored Iowa Rep. Bill Gustoff for supporting community banks.  Quad Cities Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mississippi River experts and community leaders will meet at the 19th Upper Mississippi River Conference from Oct. 14-16 at the Stoney Creek Hotel in Moline to discuss and plan the river’s future. The event will feature workshops on riverfront design, field trips to Nahant Marsh, and sessions on inland port development—focusing on sustainable solutions for the river and its ecosystem.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • A new facility at the Scott Area Landfill (in Scott County) is turning garbage gas into locally sourced energy and is already in operation.  The Quad City Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 1,000 civilian workers at Rock Island Arsenal have been furloughed as the government shutdown enters its 10th day and they face delays in pay—Rep. Eric Sorensen confirmed the furlough while essential military staff continue to work without compensation and many await a political agreement to reopen the facility.  KWQC
