COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Quad Cities Community Foundation to help eight local fire departments cover costs for equipment and training (including Davenport Fire Department). The grant is part of the Keep Communities Flowing program and supports public safety improvements across the service area.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Project Renewal had a steel-beam signing day Monday when staff and families signed an important beam — marking the start of a three-phase expansion project costing just over $3 million — after officials raised 73% of the funds and are still fundraising. The project will add a new youth center at 513 Warren St. and will rebuild the old Treat House while renovating offices and housing at 906 W. 5th St.  KWQC
  • The Jaycees of the Quad Cities will host their 2nd annual Wine & Chocolate Experience on November 8 at Common Chord in downtown Davenport — the event will run from 4-7 p.m. with a VIP start at 3:30 p.m. and let guests taste more than 50 wines and at least 10 chocolate types to help community projects. Tickets cost $50 for general entry and $75 for VIP and the event is for those 21 and older.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Flavors of India in Davenport is giving free meals to federal workers with a badge as the government shutdown enters its third week — the restaurant has already helped about 20 workers and will continue supporting those facing unpaid bills.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bettendorf schools are using National Bullying Prevention Month to train teachers and set up safe classrooms (including mentoring through WEB Crew) that help students recognize and stop bullying. The district is giving staff new tools to build strong relationships and support every student.  KWQC
  • Eastern Iowa Community Colleges will host a regional Business & Industry Forum on Oct. 16 from 7:30-10:45 a.m. at Scott Community College’s Community Center at 500 Belmont Road in Bettendorf to discuss its workforce needs survey and plan next steps for strengthening the region’s talent pipeline.  Quad Cities Business Journal

  • Brenna Teerlinck, a St. Ambrose University freshman, became the blood donation hall of fame inductee—she waited to turn 16 to donate blood instead of getting her driver's license. This achievement highlights her commitment to saving lives.  The Dispatch Argus

  • Iowa football now sits in the top half of the Big Ten after a shutout win over Wisconsin and a historic coaching change announced Sunday — the Hawkeyes will host Penn State on Saturday. Penn State will start redshirt freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer after star quarterback Drew Allar suffered a season-ending ankle injury — the team faces new challenges ahead of the game.  The Gazette
