COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Project Renewal hosted a beam signing event to launch a $1 million project that will serve neighborhood kids. The new building replaces the former duplex known as the Treat House — purchased by the group in 2002.  The Quad City Times
  • The YWCA Quad Cities is turning its former Rock Island location into the region’s only youth homeless shelter—Alan’s House—to serve up to 10 children aged 10 to 17 removed from their families due to abuse or neglect. The shelter will have round-the-clock supervision by licensed staff and will open in January.  KWQC
  • KWQC is partnering with Project Bundle Up and Rotary Club of Bettendorf to host a coat and blanket drive that will accept new or gently used winter gear at 805 Brady Street on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cash donations will be split evenly between the two causes (the drive kicks off a Quad Cities area effort running through Dec. 19).  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Common Chord merged with the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Society, and its programs will now join Common Chord's music events—preserving the festival's legacy. The merger—announced Oct. 15—will expand outreach for the Bix Jazz Festival and Youth Band, with the festival scheduled for July 30 to Aug. 1.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Wheel of Fortune Live! comes to the Capitol Theatre in Davenport today with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.—host Mark L. Walberg will randomly choose audience members to solve puzzles and win prizes.  KWQC

  • Rock Island Arsenal canceled a retiree appreciation event scheduled for Saturday — officials say it will be rescheduled for later in 2026 because of an ongoing lapse of appropriations.  KWQC

HEALTH NEWS

  • LivWell Seniors is partnering with award-winning author Lauren P. Brown to offer free seminars on caring for loved ones with dementia. The session in Davenport will take place at 6 p.m. on Oct. 29 at Silvercrest Garner Senior Living—caregivers will learn practical tips for talking to doctors and handling family concerns.  Quad Cities Business Journal
