COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 500 John Deere workers filled 5,350 boxes of food for River Bend Food Bank’s 23-county area—helping feed local families. The boxes will soon go to people in need across the region—boosting community support.  The Quad City Times
  • John Morrow, known for his world record in pushups and a 47-year career teaching martial arts, died Wednesday after a long fight with lung cancer — he raised money for children and loved playing scrabble with family and friends.  KWQC
  • YWCA Quad Cities is converting its former Rock Island site into Alan’s House, a youth homeless group home for up to 10 children aged 10 to 17 facing abuse, neglect, or other hardships. The new facility will be licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and is expected to open by January—marking the start of efforts to meet the area's youth shelter needs.  KWQC

CULTURE NEWS

  • Common Chord and the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Society announced their merger Wednesday—this partnership will allow programs like the Bix Jazz Festival from July 30 to Aug. 1 and the Bix Youth Band to use Common Chord’s resources to reach a larger audience.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Ambrose University honored six distinguished alumni at its 2025 Celebration of Generosity event — awarding recognition for service, leadership and excellence — on October 16. The awards reflected the university's mission to promote an education rooted in faith, community and purpose.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Augustana College’s Upper Mississippi Center invites local organizations, cities and counties to submit proposals for a one—to two—year partnership aimed at solving regional challenges. The Accelerator program connects community partners with UMC students and faculty to work on projects in health equity, sustainability and public policy, with applications due by Saturday, November 15.  Quad Cities Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UnityPoint Health—Trinity and Cancer Support Community Iowa and NW Illinois at Gilda’s Club are hosting Pink Party with a Purpose on Oct. 22 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at The Lincoln Center at 318 E. 7th St. in Davenport. The event will share survivor stories, a healthy cooking demo, a fitness class and games so Black women learn about breast cancer risks and the need for early screening—helping to lower late-stage diagnoses.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Doctor David Cook—a Quad-City native trained in rural medicine through the Rural Student Physicians Program—will begin treating patients at Hammond-Henry Hospital Colona Clinic on November 3; he earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria.  KWQC

  • The Quad City Storm will play in their season opener this weekend at Vibrant Arena — they will face Peoria on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. — head coach Shayne Toporowski said the team plans to build on last season's strong performance.  KWQC
  • An 8-year-old cancer survivor from Donahue, Hugh Harvey announced the Savannah Bananas will play at Kinnick Stadium in July during the 2026 City Selection Show — he finished treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma nearly two years ago. He made the announcement before thousands of fans and waved to viewers at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.  KWQC
