  • Dawn Wilcox, a longtime team member at Empowering Abilities, became the first recipient of the Debra Lindbom Memorial Scholarship awarded on October 16th—this scholarship supports her professional development and honors Deb’s legacy. She said she planned to continue her service until retirement, reflecting her dedication to the organization.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • The Rotary Club of Bettendorf is launching its fifth annual Blanket Drive to collect 4,000 blankets for those in need in the Quad Cities starting tomorrow, Oct. 24, and will run until Dec. 19. KWQC will support the effort by hosting a Blanket Donation Drive-Thru from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at its station on 805 Brady St. in Davenport.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • SNAP benefits will end Nov. 1st, forcing local food pantries to serve more people as over 20,000 Scott County residents lose federal support—River Bend Food Bank president Chris Ford said food insecurity is at a four-year high. He urged the community to donate, volunteer, and contact lawmakers—steps needed to ease the strain on hunger-relief services.  KWQC

  • On Oct. 21, Blackhawk Bank & Trust set a new leadership plan when executive vice president Eric Huiskamp Mutka was named CEO and President Chris Lemon kept his role to guide the bank's growth. Board member John Hoscheidt said he will not run for reelection and plans for a full rebuild of the Valley Center branch at 4100 44th Ave. were shared—meant to ensure a smooth transition.  Quad Cities Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Davenport LULAC chapter donated $500 to Madison Elementary during its Community Partners Coalition meeting on Wednesday to buy safety signs for student drop-off and pickup. The donation is part of LULAC's effort to support local schools including Jefferson, Hayes, and Fillmore.  KWQC

  • Residents in the Quad Cities are preparing for the season's first widespread frost as temperatures near freezing. Experts advise applying fresh mulch to gardens, watering trees, sealing homes to keep out rodents, draining hot water heaters, and unhooking outdoor hoses as colder weather approaches.  KWQC

HEALTH NEWS

  • ImpactLife now uses a non-invasive device called OrSense that checks blood donors' hemoglobin levels without a finger prick—this new method cuts the use of lancets, gloves, and bandages at centers in Davenport, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.  KWQC

  • Local expert Andrea Morgan from The Green Thumbers in Davenport advised families to choose pumpkins with a flat bottom, smooth face, and intact stem—tips that help the pumpkin last longer when carved.
