COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food pantries in Scott County are preparing for a rise in demand as SNAP benefits will freeze on November 1 – more than 250,000 Iowans depend on these benefits, and recent numbers show a significant increase in people seeking help. Heart of Hope Ministries in Rock Island served 154 people last week and is collaborating with other agencies to meet the growing need.  KWQC

  • The Women Lead Change Quad Cities Conference will be held on November 12 at the Waterfront Convention Center in Bettendorf—local business leaders will gather to learn and build stronger workplace connections. CEO Tiffany O’Donnell says the event is designed to help busy professionals step out of their silos and reconnect in person.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Eastern Iowa Community College presented its Workforce Training Survey 2025 on Oct. 16 at Scott Community College in Bettendorf—87 local employers identified key needs in leadership and digital skills. MetroLINK CEO Jeff Nelson retired earlier this month after 42 years, and his successor Benjamin Limmer is set to lead the agency.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Greystone Manufacturing laid off 85 workers from its Bettendorf facility per a WARN notification filed on Oct 23 — the company has not yet provided reasons for the layoffs.  KWQC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa Community Colleges was named one of 200 schools eligible for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, a competition that recognizes high student success. The colleges will enter a rigorous review process with a Dec 9 application deadline, semi-finalist announcements in April 2026, finalist picks in June 2026, and the final award given in spring 2027—steps meant to highlight effective teaching and improved outcomes.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Two candidates running for a two-year term on the Davenport School Board answered questions in a Q&A with the Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus as voters prepare for the Nov. 4 election — they outlined their reasons for running and the challenges the district faces.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Traffic alerts in Davenport include the ongoing 3rd Street Resurfacing Project on southern lanes between Telegraph and Howell—contractors are milling asphalt and installing new sidewalks until fall. Iowa DOT is rehabilitating the Harrison Street Bridge—travel will be reduced to two lanes between W 35th and W 32nd Streets until December.  KWQC
  • Governor Reynolds said Iowa food banks will get increased state help when SNAP benefits do not come due because of the federal shutdown. He ordered HHS to recruit volunteers & the Iowa National Guard to prepare for food operations while state funds will match donations up to $1 million starting November 3.  KWQC

  • A Bettendorf mother who experienced the NICU delivered 50 handmade Halloween costumes to Trinity BirthPlace on Thursday so that families can share a festive first Halloween—Project NICU will continue to offer care packages and support to families across the Quad Cities.  KWQC
