COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army Quad Cities is scrambling to secure funds for a temporary winter shelter after ARPA money ran out—officials have not set when or where the emergency housing program for families will open.  The Quad City Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Quad Cities union trades and contractors will host the Building Futures Career Expo at the QCCA Expo Center in Rock Island on November 18 — dividing the day into a student session from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a community trades session from 2:30 to 4 p.m. where participants can explore hands-on activities in trades like plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • Ascentra Credit Union will award $15,000 in scholarships to 15 student members for the 2026 school year to help pay for postsecondary education. Students must apply online by the end of the day on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 — applicants are judged on their essays, resumes, awards, extracurricular activities and volunteer service.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • More than 3,800 local eighth graders from 27 schools attended the two-day Junior Achievement Inspire Career Fair at the Bend Expo Center in Moline, where 55 area businesses showed them job paths and how to plan for school success — the event gave students a chance to ask questions and build connections with potential employers — paving the way for future career decisions.  KWQC
  • Quad-Cities leaders met to discuss an Illinois schools report focusing on chronic absenteeism, declining mental health, and affordability issues. They reviewed targeted strategies to boost school support and improve community resources.  The Quad City Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • As temperatures drop, nonprofits reported that funds for other housing programs have dried up while local officials have not yet finalized a plan for an emergency winter shelter in the Quad-Cities.  The Quad City Times
  • Rhythm City Casino has released a list of fall grants totaling $2.2 million from the Riverboat Development Authority for local events, organizations, and charities — including $25,000 for the Quad City Air Show, $50,000 for Alternating Currents, $100,000 for Bettendorf's Landing Pool and Ice Rink, $75,000 for lighting in Davenport, and $100,000 for the River Bend Food Bank. Dozens of social service agencies also received funding through the program.  KWQC

  • Dave had a routine CT scan that found a small spot in his lung and UnityPoint Health is urging residents to talk with their doctors soon about early lung cancer screening this November—screening can catch nodules before symptoms appear and improve outcomes.  KWQC

  • Retired after 24 years coaching Iowa women's basketball, Lisa Bluder—the Big Ten’s all-time winningest coach—shared her plans to debut as an NBC analyst with over 700 attendees at the Waterfront Convention Center on November 12.  Quad Cities Business Journal
