COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Quad Cities Botanical Center will host Pay What You Want Nights at its Winter Lights display on Jan. 2-3. Guests can visit from 5 to 8 p.m. with last entry at 7:30 p.m. to view over 315,000 glowing lights across five acres of garden grounds.  KWQC
  • Sam Wiley from the Rock Island County Animal Care and Control Shelter in Moline introduced Grace, a vocal and playful 4-month-old shorthair as Tuesday's adoptable pet. Adoption fees remain discounted and the shelter needs volunteers to help care for animals during the holiday season.  KWQC

  • A new online portal called We Make It Local launches to help local businesses sell products and let consumers shop from anywhere + its goal is to boost local commerce for the community.  The Quad City Times
  • The Quad Cities Chamber and its Grow QC group reported on Dec. 5 a year-end progress check outlining plans to expand industrial space and boost local companies as the bi-state region enters 2026.   • Davenport-based Lee Enterprises received a $50M investment & announced a leadership change on Tuesday, Dec. 30. David Hoffmann will assume the role of chairman while CEO Kevin Mowbray retires as the company aims to strengthen its financial structure.  Quad Cities Business Journal
  • A new Q-C website + We Make It Local helps small businesses sell products online and allows local shoppers to buy from anywhere. The platform aims to boost our local economy by connecting sellers and buyers in one easy site.  The Dispatch Argus
  • Lee Enterprises has secured a $50 million investment (led by David Hoffmann as board chair) and announced that President and CEO Kevin Mowbray will soon retire. The leadership changes will reshape the company.  The Quad City Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa's new SNAP restrictions will ban candy, pop and prepackaged groceries starting Thursday, leading some locals to shop in Illinois to avoid confusing rules (a change that may affect local retailers). Over 20,000 Scott County residents rely on these benefits to keep food on the table.  KWQC

  • Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz & Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea shared mutual respect before the ReliaQuest Bowl, which will kickoff at 11:00 a.m. today, as Ferentz praised Vanderbilt's hard work after they reached a historic 10-win season.  KWQC
