Two Quad Cities bridge replacements, I-80 and Centennial, took key steps in October
The Daily Davenport team
Two Quad Cities bridge projects took key steps forward in October: a final design for a new I-80 bridge at LeClaire and a preferred plan to replace the Centennial Bridge. Together they're expected to cost more than $635 million.
If you cross the Centennial Bridge, here's the plan. Iowa and Illinois recommended E2, a new span immediately next to the old one, pending Federal Highway Administration approval. The states would share costs 50/50, and the 1940 bridge would come down around 2036.
Plan E2 for the Centennial Bridge costs less than E7

|---|---|
| E2: next to the old bridge | $237 million |
| E7: to 11th Street | $295 million |
The I-80 replacement will be two bridges, costing at least $400 million, with construction expected to start in early 2028. The final plans include a multi-use path that came directly from public input.
The bridge work is expected to stretch into the 2030s
- Summer '27The Centennial Bridge Phase I study is expected to conclude.
- Early 2028Construction on the new I-80 bridge is expected to start.
- 2029–2030The current I-80 bridge is expected to be demolished as the eastbound span starts.
- 2033The new I-80 bridges are expected to be finished around this time.
- 2036The old Centennial Bridge would be demolished around this time, once the new one is done.
- Centennial Bridge: opened 1940, over 22,000 vehicles a day
- I-80 bridge: opened 1967, over 33,000 vehicles a day
- E7 would have affected at least nine HUD properties
