BUSINESS NEWS

  • A local entrepreneur opened Brows & Beauty, a new threading and beauty service in Davenport and faced many challenges from designing the space to winning customer trust—helped by strong family support. The business will offer new treatments soon.  The Quad City Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Davenport police responded early Monday before 3:15 a.m. to a domestic disturbance on Jersey Ridge Road and discharged their firearms at an armed subject, with the injured person taken to a Quad Cities hospital while the officers involved have been placed on critical-incident leave and a joint investigation by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and Scott County Sheriff’s Office is underway.  OurQuadCities

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Davenport and Common Chord announced that the Big 9 Summer Concert Series will begin May 31 at Quinlan Court with the Karli Bunn Quintet performing from 6—8 p.m. The series will offer various musical styles at downtown hotspots and riverfront parks along nine miles of the Mississippi riverfront where food vendors will be present.  Quad Cities Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Schools in the Quad Cities celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week with events such as a marigold giveaway at Hayes Elementary—held on May 6—and teachers dressing like students at Moline High on May 7. A bus driver appreciation event at Davenport’s new district bus barn—highlighting community support—added to the week of educator recognition.  The Quad City Times
  • On Monday, Davenport seniors from the local school district received $106,300 in scholarships—58 awards aim to support students' post-secondary studies. Cohen Callaway of Davenport North received the $20,000 Kathryn Bell Tate Scholarship to help cover his college costs.  KWQC
  • Quad-Cities schools celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week with events and social media posts that thanked teachers. Hayes Elementary in Davenport gave marigold flowers to teachers—while Davenport schools hosted a bus driver event and other districts held fun contests and student video tributes.  The Dispatch Argus

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • KWQC updated its weekly traffic alert list for Iowa and Illinois covering several local projects in Davenport, including the ongoing East Locust bridge rehabilitation and widening on Northwest Blvd. Drivers should expect detours and lane closures as local crews work to improve road conditions—plans may change as construction continues.  KWQC
  • Local leaders are holding a press conference this morning to discuss the Rock Island Arsenal after a Defense Secretary memo called for major restructuring and job cuts—this may affect more than 6,000 base workers. Union leaders say 400 jobs could be cut immediately and Iowa and Illinois congressional delegations have urged the military to keep the base’s key role in national security in mind—news that could impact the local economy.  KWQC
